Why I Chose Conservation

For me, I have always been fond of objects and artefacts in museums in particular, and I always wondered how these objects survived for such a long time while preserving their historical and aesthetic values. When I discovered Conservation, I wanted to be part of the people who contribute to preserving these artefacts so that other people can enjoy them as I did. Also, as I am originally from Oman, a country known for its ancient history, my main goal in studying the major was to contribute and be part of the people who preserve the history of my country.

Career Aspirations

My career aspiration is to work as an objects conservator specializing in ceramics, because I enjoyed working on ceramics in particular during my three years at university, but I am also open to any suitable specialism. I also aspire to work as a preventive conservator.

Best University Experience

My best university experience was doing a placement at Manchester Museum’s conservation department for 3 months early in 2022. My work at the museum included conserving a range of different organic and inorganic objects. I was also involved in assisting with Integrated Pest Management procedures and preparing objects for freezing. As well as I attended two workshops to expand my knowledge of new conservation technologies (Laser cleaning, and 3D laser Scanning). Through this experience, I gained many new skills and contributed to the wider teams and the museum’s objectives. I also had the opportunity to practice my already existing skills that I learned from the university before.
